For many deaf and hard-of-hearing people, English is a foreign language. Most prefer to communicate in American Sign Language (ASL), their first language. However, ASL is very unique in that it requires the skill of a highly trained interpreter to convey the true meaning of a conversation in two languages and do so simultaneously.
Video relay service (VRS) replaces the outdated English-based TTY technology. VRS enables a deaf person to talk in real time with their doctor, child’s teacher or to place a pizza order with very little effort. The process is simple. Using a free videophone, the deaf person calls an interpreter who greets them and asks for the phone number of the person they wish to call. The interpreter then places the call to the hearing person’s mobile or landline telephone. When the hearing person answers their phone, the interpreter will sign to the deaf caller while talking with the hearing caller. The service is free, fast and confidential.
